Duplex Facts

There are different styles of duplexes throughout the city of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood and Hancock Park Adjacent areas. The styles include: the majestic Spanish Revival, English Tudor, French Normandy and Mediterranean. The most admired is the two-story, stucco and red tiled roof-upstairs, downstairs unit. However, they were also built as one-story, side by side units and side by side townhouse style. I also consider two homes on a lot as a duplex.

These structures were built to resemble single family homes in the 1920's and 1930's to accommodate the growing population in Los Angeles. They have the look and feel of a single family and were made to blend in the neighborhood. People that could not afford a single family home found these apartment houses the next best thing. In the past five years, as the market price of a single family home continues to escalate, there has been a resurgence in the duplex market.

These duplexes were built with the utmost of care, detail and workmanship. Some of their characteristics include: beautiful high ceilings, beamed, barrel or vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors throughout, peg 'n groove hardwood flooring, beautiful, colorful art deco tiling in the kitchens (floor to ceiling) and rich tiling in the bathrooms, stained glass front windows, leaded glass windows, French windows, arched windows, wrought iron balconies, skylights, stately fireplaces, Batchelder tile fireplaces, china cabinets, matching cabinetry throughout the rooms, center hall floor plans, intricate moldings, and beautiful arches to name a few.
